Spring Plant Sale
On the 24th & 25th of November we welcome you to visit our garden nursery in Shipka and take a few homegrown plants back to your own gardens. The plants we have on offer are listed below. If you are interested in any of them, please contact us with your order, the date that you will visit , and we will prepare the plants ready for collection. We will be open from 10.00 - 16.00 on the 24th and the 25th, and will be happy to show you around the garden and answer any questions you may have. We will also have seeds of unusual and interesting species for swapping so please bring along your own.
Why have a plant sale at this time of year when it's cold and the garden is mostly dormant ? Autumn is the optimum time for planting perennial plants. When the plant is put into the ground in the autumn, although the conditions are cold above ground, the soil is normally warm enough for root growth below the ground to continue until late December. This gives the plant roots time to settle in and be fully prepared for reawakened growth in the spring.
Below is a list of the plants we have on offer, and by clicking on the plant name you will find extensive information about that particular specie including uses, functions, ecology, niche requirements and more. We have limited stock so please reserve your plants by contacting us via email at balkanecologyproject@gmail.

The NurseryOur Nursery is in its fledgling years of development and we are excited to start offering the beautiful and interesting plants that we have nurtured in our own gardens. Our plants are reared with various types of organic composts made on site. We use polyculture planting schemes to repel pests and ensure pathogen-free plants. We do NOT use chemicals or any other methods harmful to the environment. As a result, our plants are more resilient and better prepared for a life outside the nursery setting. We aim to not only provide individual plants but communities of plants that relate to each other symbiotically commonly known as "guilds" or "companion plants".
We collect seeds native to the Balkan region as well as exotic species from all over the world , and grow them in our gardens which serve as a demonstration area for visitors. We are looking for happy homes/ecosystems for our plants! |

The GardenOur garden, the home of the plants we are offering, is a 6 year old Permaculture Garden and includes over 280 species of plants. Other features include: a Forest Garden, Gray water beds, Rainwater Catchment, Wildlife Ponds, Tyre Ponds, Annual vegetable beds, Guild Planting, Herb Spiral, Passive Irrigation, Vermi composting, Humanure composting, Propagation beds, Chicken Tractors and Rabbit Rearing. The garden is a work in progress, but as it stands, it's a good example of small scale intensive permaculture and yields abundantly both for us and many other organisms. Obviously in late Autumn most of the garden life is preparing for winter dormancy, but it still provides a good example of a productive ecological ecosystem.
