ROOT CUTTINGS
Comfrey - Symphytum x uplandicum ‘Bocking 14’ - Root Cuttings
Considered a super plant by many we find that Comfrey lives up to its name. Comfrey provides copious amounts of biomass, accumulates Nitrogen (N), Phosphorous (P) and Potassium (K) deep from the soil, along with Iron (Fe) and Calcium (Ca) and makes excellent mulch for the garden. The healing properties of Comfrey are well renowned, making it an essential first aid plant. The beautiful flowers are much loved by bees and the plant provides excellent ground cover. Have the plant stationed underneath fruit trees where the deep tap root will accumulate minerals from the sub soil and deposit them to the shallow tree roots via simple 'chop and drop' mulching.

HOW TO HARVEST Do not cut your plants the first year. This allows them to establish a good root system. The following spring you may start to cut the plants and providing they receive adequate water and nutrition you may cut 4 or 5 times in a growing season. Cut to 5cm from the ground with a sharp knife or secateurs. If you have sensitive skin wear some gloves as Comfrey leaves are a little prickly.

HOW TO HARVEST Your horseradish harvest should commence in late fall, after several frosts have damaged the leaves. Use a digging fork to loosen the soil on two sides of the plant, gathering up broken pieces of root as you dig. Then loosen the soil on the other side of the plant before attempting to pull it. Harvesting horseradish can continue into winter provided the ground is not frozen — or, you can dig the roots first thing in spring. Between diggings, keep fresh horseradish roots in the fridge, ready to use.
