Walnut trees make a magnificent feature for the larger garden. Our plants are a spur bearing variety and slightly more compact than others.   • Light: Full sun, dappled shade
  • soil pH:  acid-neutral -basic alkaline

  • Can tolerate an annual precipitation of 31 to 147cm, an annual temperature in the range of 7.0 to 21.1°C and a pH in the range of 4.5 to 8.2

Overview

  • Deciduous Tree growing to 20 m by 20 m at a medium rate. 
  • It is in flower in June, and the seeds ripen in October. The flowers are monoecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but both sexes can be found on the same plant) and are pollinated by Wind.The plant is self-fertile. 
  • Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and prefers well-drained soil.
  • Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. 
  • It cannot grow in the shade. It prefers moist soil.

Products 

  • Fruit: Very tasty and nutritious nuts. The seed can also be ground into a meal and used as a flavouring in sweet and savoury dishes

  • Wood : Heavy, hard, durable, close grained, seasons and polishes well. A very valuable timber tree, it is used for furniture making, veneer etc
  • Medicinal: The walnut tree has a long history of medicinal use, being used in folk medicine to treat a wide range of complaint.

  • Probably has allelopathic effects on other plant species growing nearby.
  • Develops deep, wide spreading root system that can be aggressive. 
  • Seeds dispersed by birds.
  •  It is generally best to grow at least two different cultivars to assist in cross-pollination
