 The humble yet cheerfully attractive blooms of the daisy are well known to most as peppering lawns with an attractive yellow and white colour, and, of course as a feature of childhood making daisy chains. Bellis perennis is a valuable addition to grassland areas managed for wildflowers and wildlife attracting a good deal of attention from useful pollinators. Medicinally, the plant is known for its healing properties and can be used topically on small wounds, sores and scratches to speed up the healing process. Overview

  • 10cm x 12cm plant bag
  • Evergreen perennial growing to 0.2 m by 0.2 m at a medium rate
  • It is in flower from Jan - Dec and seeds ripen from May - Oct
  • The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by bees and flies. The plant is self-fertile. 
  • Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils 
  • Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils.
  • It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers well drained moist soil

Products 

  • Leaves: The leaves are basal, short-haired and sit in a dense rosette that is pressed against the ground. They are edible and sometimes used in salads although they are not to everyone's taste. The stems are straight and produce radiate white flower heads.
  • Flowers: Although appearing to be singular, the flower heads are actually composite. Pretty delicate white petals center around a yellow middle.
  • Medicinal:  It is primarily the flower heads that are used as medicine, but the leaves can also be used. Daisy has anti-inflammatory and mild astringent properties and has been used for years internally, in tea form, as herbal remedy for the common cold, bronchitis and other inflammatory conditions of the upper respiratory tract.

  • The plants have a very long flowering season, they will even produce a few flowers in the middle of mild winters
