Golden Garlic - Allium moly - €3 per plant

Golden Garlic is well known as an ornamental flowering onion, noted for its bright and cheerful star-shaped yellow flowers, that as well as attracting a wide range of pollinators, also make a great addition to a salad bowl. An easily grown plant, preferring a sunny position in well drained soil,  Golden Garlic grows well with most plants (except legumes), especially roses, carrots, beet and chamomile. Predators

  • We have not come across any pest or predation for this plant in our garden 

Needs, tolerances 

  • Light: Full sun, partial shade
  • soil pH:  Acid, neutral -basic alkaline 
  • USDA Hardiness Zone: 3-9
  • Doesn't grow well in full shade
  • Prefers well drained soil
  • Can tolerate drought  


Known hazards 

  • Although no individual reports regarding this species have been seen, there have been cases of poisoning caused by the consumption, in very large quantities and by some mammals, of certain members of this genus. 

Overview

  • Bulbous perennial growing to 0.3 m by 0.1 m at a fast rate​
  • In flower from June-July and seeds ripen July-Aug, and the seeds ripen from Sep to Oct. 
  • The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees and other insects.
  • Noted for attracting wildlife. 
  • Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy)  and prefers well-drained soil 
  • Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils.
  • Can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or full sun
  • Can tolerate drought

Products

  • Thought to improve the taste of carrots, tomatoes and grapes. May be beneficial to roses,  but it inhibits the growth of legumes.
