The Balkan Ecology Project (BALKEP) is a permaculture-inspired, grassroots project based in Eastern Europe (Bulgaria). BALKEP is devoted to the design and exploration of ecologically-sound human habitats and serves as a demonstration site for local residents, communities and visitors from abroad. Our efforts aim to develop thoughtful approaches to food, shelter, community and commerce, while promoting and preserving the unique biological diversity associated with the Balkan region.
This site serves as a catalogue of our development and a portal for you to get involved. |

The Bio-Nursery
We are now offering a diverse collection of healthy and robust plants ideal for forest gardens, perennial plantings, and permaculture systems. Click here to view our plant selection.
Our Nursery is in its fledgling years of development and we are excited to start offering the beautiful and interesting plants that we have nurtured in our gardens. Our plants are reared with various types of organic composts made on site or purchased from local, organic farmers. We use polyculture planting schemes to repel pests and ensure pathogen-free plants. We do NOT use chemicals or any other methods harmful to the environment. As a result, our plants are more resilient and better prepared for a life outside the nursery setting.
We collect seeds native to the Balkan region as well as exotic species from all over the world , and grow them at our Forest Garden which serves as a demonstration area for our visitors.
