The Balkan Ecology Project is a permaculture-inspired, grassroots project based in Eastern Europe (Bulgaria). We are devoted to the design and exploration of ecologically-sound human habitats and serve as a demonstration site for local residents, communities and visitors from abroad. Our efforts aim to develop thoughtful approaches to food, shelter, community and commerce, while promoting and preserving the unique biological diversity associated with the Balkan region and the world at large.

Join in a seed swap, general chit chat on all things garden related and a tour of our ecological gardens.
We receive much joy and satisfaction sending out the beautiful and interesting plants that we have nurtured in our gardens. Our plants are reared with various types of organic composts made on site or purchased from local organic farmers. We use polyculture planting schemes to repel pests and ensure pathogen-free plants. We do NOT use commercial chemicals or practice any methods harmful to the environment. As a result, our plants are more resilient and better prepared for a life outside the nursery setting.
We collect seeds native to the Balkan region as well as exotic species from all over the world , and grow them at our Forest Gardens which serve as a demonstration areas for our visitors. All income derived from plant sales goes towards the development of our project, focusing on the purchasing of land with high ecological value currently under threat from intensive agricultural development. The land, once under our stewardship, is managed with respect for its inherent value and vital ecosystem services. View our plants.
