Upper Canopy Tree Layer
50 seeds - Alnus Cordata - Italian Alder
The Italian Alder medium-sized tree grows up to 25 m tall. The leaves are deciduous but with a very long season in leaf, from April to December. Like other members of Alnus genus, it is able to fix nitrogen from the air. It thrives on much drier soils than most other alders, and grows rapidly even under very unfavourable circumstances, which renders it extremely valuable for landscape planting on poor soils and heavily compacted sites. It is commonly grown as a windbreak
30 seeds - Gleditisia triacanthos - Honey Locust
The Honey Locust is an impressive tree albeit a little hostile, what with the 15 cm thorns that protrude from all parts of the tree like living barbed wire. It is unusual in that although part of the legume family, this tree does not fix nitrogen, however its many other attributes make it a worthwhile occupant in the large garden and an invaluable tree for over story pasture. Some sources report it does fix nitrogen.
Lower Canopy Tree Layer
10 seeds - Prunus persica - Wild Peach
These seeds are harvested from our own Wild Peach trees that are hardy to -20C and can handle spring frosts of -4C without damaging blooms. They show excellent resistance to Peach Leaf Curl and yield an abundance of sweet, yellow flesh fruit every year. In April the trees burst into a purple cloud of blossom much loved by honey bees and other pollinating invertebrates
A Herald of spring, Cornellian Cherry is the first tree to flower in late February providing a valuable source of nectar for the bees. The flowers go on to form wonderful grape shaped fruits in late summer delicious when ripe. The plant is drought and wind tolerant and can be used effectively in a windbreak. The plant takes well to pruning and can be shaped to form a dense hedge. An excellent shade tree providing dense cool shade on the hottest of days, can also tolerate shade and will grow well in the under story of larger trees.
30 seeds - Cornus mas - Cornelian Cherry
40 seeds - Elaeagnus angustifolia - Russian Olive
An very hardy fast growing shrub that produces tasty edible berries. The plant is ideal for hedging and windbreaks , tolerates drought and poor soils and like all the plants in this genus, has Nitrogen Fixing capabilities and when planted with fruit trees is said to increase the overall yield of the orchard by 10% whilst themselves producing a yield of berries.
Japanese Quince is a hardy versatile shrub. The plants flowers early in the year providing a valuable source of early food for bees. The flowers form highly aromatic edible fruits that are ready for picking from October onward. Growing well in partial shade the plants can be grown in the under story of larger fruit trees. They take well to trimming and can be used within a living hedge.
30 seeds - Chaenomeles speciosa - Japanese Quince
Akebia quinata is a woody perennial that grows either as a twining vine or a ground cover. It comes into leaf in early spring and shortly after leafing is adorned with beautiful purple flowers that form edible fruit in August - September. For fruit production, it is best practice to grow two plants in order for cross pollination to occur. The plant can grow in the shade and makes a good candidate for a vertical layer in the temperate forest garden.
